This site is run by Killeen Law PLLC, a Michigan law practice. This policy explains what the site collects, where it goes, and what you can do about it. It's written in plain English on purpose. When this Privacy Policy refers to “I”, “me”, “we”, etc., that’s referring to Killeen Law PLLC. When it refers to “you”, “your”, etc. it’s referring to any user of this website.
Read this part first
Using this site or booking a call does not make you a client or me your attorney, and it does not make what you send me privileged. An attorney-client relationship starts when I've run a conflict check and both you and I have signed an engagement letter, and not before. A “conflict check” is due diligence that a lawyer does to ensure that duties they have (to other clients or otherwise) wouldn’t present a conflict of interest if they also represented a potential new client.
So when you book a call, tell me who you are and give me a one-line description of the subject. That's all I need to check for conflicts and decide whether I can help. Please don't send details about your situation until we've done that. If it turns out I can't take the matter, information you sent early can create problems for both of us.
Once you are a client, your information is protected by an attorney's duty of confidentiality, which is broader and stronger than this policy. This policy is about a website. That duty is about legal and code-of-ethics rules.
What this site collects
Information you give me. If you book a call, the scheduling tool collects your name, your email address, and whatever you type into the booking form. If you email me from a link on this site, I get whatever's in your email.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, this one records basic technical information when you visit: your IP address, your browser and device type, the pages you look at, how long you stay, and the site that sent you here if there was one. This happens through the site's hosting platform.
Never send Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, or similar sensitive information through this website or by unencrypted email.
Cookies and analytics
This site sets a small number of cookies. One is a security cookie. The others record that a browser has visited before and when, which is what produces the visitor counts I look at.
There are no advertising cookies, no retargeting pixels, and no third-party ad networks on this site. I am not tracking who reads a page about legal services and following them around the internet with it.
Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in their settings.
Third parties that receive information
Two companies process information from this site, and each has its own privacy policy:
Squarespace hosts the site and provides the built-in visitor analytics.
Google provides the appointment scheduling tool embedded on this site and the email account the firm uses. Booking a call means Google receives your booking details and technical information about your visit.
I don't sell your information and I don't share it for anyone's marketing, including my own. Beyond the platforms above, I disclose information only with your permission, when a rule of professional conduct permits or requires it, or when the law requires it.
What I do with it
I use what the site collects automatically to get general analytics on visitors’ use of the site so I can make sure the site is providing the information about my business that people need and to understand how visitors are finding the site so I know what marketing channels or other avenues are best to bring new visitors to the site.
If you book a call through the booking form on the site, I use the information you provide to run conflict checks, answer your questions, schedule and prepare for calls, deliver legal work once you're a client, and keep the records a law practice is required to keep.
How long I keep it
Client files are kept for seven years after a matter closes, which is the firm's retention policy and is set out in the engagement letter. Inquiries that don't become matters are kept as long as I need them to run future conflict checks, because knowing who I've previously spoken with is how I avoid a conflict later. Automatic technical data ages out on the hosting platform's own schedule.
Your choices
You can ask me what data I hold about you, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it. Email me and I'll do it, or tell you plainly why I can't. Some records I'm required to keep, and conflict records in particular exist to protect other people as well as you. You can email me at tim@killeenlawpllc.com to discuss your data.
Some states, countries, etc. have specific laws that provide the people living in those jurisdictions with formal rights to make these kind of data requests, but whether or not you live in one of those jurisdictions, I’m happy to discuss it with you.
Do Not Track
Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" signal. There's no shared industry standard for what a site should do when it gets one, so this site doesn't respond to it. I don't permit third parties to collect personally identifiable information about your activity across other websites through this site.
Children
This site is intended to be used by prospective clients of Killeen Law PLLC or other members of the public who are adults and it is not intended to be used by or aimed toward children. I don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 and if you are under 13, please talk to your parent or legal guardian before doing anything on this site.
Security
Site and booking data sit with the platforms named above and are protected by their security measures. I use multi-factor authentication and a password manager on the accounts that reach this information. No website or email system is completely secure. If we need to exchange something sensitive, tell me and we'll find the best channel to do that.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version goes on this page with a new date at the top. If something substantial changed, I’ll note that with the new date so it’s clear.
